Mole was founded in June, 2005. The business idea was to make an automated solution for nucleic acid preparation available to all research labs. In February 2008 Mole Genetics launched the GeneMole instrument for the European market. The GeneMole is designed to extract nucleic acids from a wide range of samples and deliver high quality DNA and RNA to an affordable price.
The Mole story starts with a tiny bead that changed Norwegian biotech industry! In the 1970’s, Professor John Ugelstad at NTNU Trondheim, Norway achieved something miraculous. His research team managed to synthesize identical micrometer sized polymer spheres. This had previously only been possible under weightless conditions by NASA. The beads were later magnetized, and the technology biomagnetic separation was born. It was a faster and more precise method to separate cells, viruses and other biological material and became an industry standard in disciplines like immunoassay diagnostics. Ugelstad’s invention is the key technology of Norway’s most successful biotech companies; Dynal Biotech (acquired by Invitrogen 2005), GenoVision (acquired by Qiagen 2002), Nycomed Imaging (acquired by GE Health 1997).
Mole Genetics’ team members have participated in frontline of the biomagnetic separation innovation all the way from the work of John Ugelstad* via Dynal Biotech and as co-founders of GenoVision. With Mole Genetics, we aim to write the next chapter of the Norwegian biotech success story.
This is Mole Genetics’ vision. Science will probably never be easy, but the scientific work can be greatly simplified with the right research tools. More answers with less effort. Streamlining the lab with automated methods is one way of speeding up science. Biomagnetic separation is ideal for automation, but because the instruments that accompany the beads are too advanced or too expensive, the technology has remained an art for specialty laboratories. Mole Genetics’ first products bring automated biomagnetic separation to any life-science research laboratory by introducing truly intuitive systems to an attractive price.
Extracting pure DNA from biological samples is a critical step in any genetic analysis, but the process is still done by tedious and laborious manual methods. Mole Genetics recently launched GeneMole® and for the first time; automated extraction of DNA and RNA is possible for every life-science laboratory. The GeneMole® trilogy consists of hardware, software and reagents pre-filled in sealed strips. All components are working in concert and tuned to each other. GeneMole® offers maximum convenience for the user and minimal strain on their budgets. It has never been easier for so many laboratories to get high quality DNA or RNA.
