Fellowships and bursaries

General information

Applicants for all BACR Awards should email their applications and related documentation to: bacr@icr.ac.uk with BACR Award Application written in the subject line.

The closing dates for applications are: 28 February, 30 June and 31 October each year, although in exceptional circumstances, at the discretion of the Awards Committee, decisions may be taken at other times.

Applicants can expect to hear the outcome within a month of the closing date.

In situations where the applications are in excess of the funds available, the following criteria will be viewed favourably, although the Awards Committee will exert flexibility of judgement:

Meeting bursaries

Purpose: Primarily to help non-student members to attend scientific meetings relevant to cancer research.

Value: Up to a maximum of £800. Bursaries will cover 2nd class overland fares or APEX air-fare (if applicable), registration fees and cost of accommodation plus an allowance for subsistence. The total sum requested should be stated in the application. However, as it is unlikely that the cost will be met in full, applicants are encouraged to seek additional awards or support from their home institution. All receipts must be returned along with a written report that may be published in the Association's newsletter.

Travel / Exchange Fellowships

The BACR Travel/Exchange Fellowship scheme provides an excellent opportunity for researchers in the UK to spend time learning new techniques and gaining experience in another laboratory. The time I spent in Boston was a stimulating one, both from a scientific and personal point of view, and I would strongly encourage BACR members who are eligible to consider submitting Exchange Fellowship applications.

Mid-career fellowships

Purpose: To provide funds to support travel to a laboratory and reasonable subsistence costs, to enable the applicant to advance an on-going programme or facilitate a collaboration which may lead to new programmes of work. The fellowships are not intended to support attendance at a meeting.
